The 2012 Legendary Banked Slalom went off again for the 27th year in a row! The GNU team showed up and kicked some ass on the course bringing home at least 4 duct tape trophies! Thanks to the Howats, all of the LBS crew, racers and spectators.

“This year’s course was a little rough, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen worse at the LBS! There was a little of everything from top to bottom… from blue ice to sloppy slush, and it was snowing by the time we took our final runs. I felt pretty lucky to make it down without getting chewed up by any of those turns, and it was nice to finally get some more duct tape, it’s been a while.”-Barrett Christy

Maribeth Swetkoff-Kramer gets around. She calls June Lake home, but is always on an adventure, whether hiking in her backyard or exploring the mountains in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, or Washington. She looks at the whole mountain as her park and rides with a confidence that reflects her shred experience. As a faithful Gnu board tester she puts in time on all the boards. This season the B-pro and B-street came out on top as her go-to boards!

This winter, I have been riding tons of powder! Lots of hiking and back country madness! The Eastern Sierras have been blessed all season long with blankets of heavy snow… In between pow riding, I have done some contests, some film and photo shoots, gone to a few events, and just got back from an amazing trip to Japan! I also just found out that my season will be extra long since Mammoth Mountain announced that they have enough snow to stay open until the 4th of July! Here’s a few photos from my season so far….

The Gnu Girls had a great showing at the Roxy Chicken Jam last weekend. Everyone was there to ride a legit park setup and have fun in some perfect spring Mammoth conditions. (At least it was when the wind wasn’t blowing 50 miles per hour) Bryn, Maribeth, and Kaitlyn were there along with Sandra Hillen and Michelle Zeller. Bryn and Maribeth were right at home in Mammoth’s slopestyle course and Kaitlyn took advantage of the spring conditions to play around in the perfect Mammoth superpipe.

The level of women’s snowboarding there was inspiring, and seeing all these girls together was pretty impressive. The Chicken Jam is an impressive gathering of the best female competitors from all over the world! This was a good warmup for Ms Superpark for Maribeth, Bryn and Sandra. Bryn Valaika, Maribeth Swetkoff along with Sandra Hillen will be heading to Ms Superpark in Snow Summit this week. All of them rolling straight from the Chicken Jam. They are always stoked to join all the top women at the annual Ms Superpark!
San Juan Capistrano, CA (March 29, 2010) – SNOWBOARDER Magazine’s sixth Annual Ms. Superpark® kicks off tomorrow at Snow Summit. Snowboarding’s top female talent will converge on a custom terrain park; sessioning day and night for four days straight in the hopes of catching a few jaw-dropping moments on film.

GNU GIRL Bryn Valaika at last years Superpark
As the single largest event open exclusively to females, Ms. Superpark® has become a favorite among the athletes. To Hana Beaman, Ms. Superpark® is one of the highlights of her year. “Nowhere else can I ride such a sick setup with all my friends. This year is gonna be even better because it is happening on the same Snow Summit trails I grew up riding on! Bring it!”
Joining Hana on her home turf will be fellow heavyweights Bryn Valaika, Alexis Waite and Tara Dakides alongside up-and-comers like Sarka Pancochova, Spencer O’Brien and Raewyn Reid. “This event is about camaraderie, progression and fun,” says Kenny Mitchell, Action Sports Team Manager, Gatorade. “But it requires long days on the mountain and having Gatorade on hand helps the riders stay fueled so they can go all day.” At Ms. Superpark® the goal is not the podium and the other riders are not competition. Instead, the goal is to push the limits and the riders are there to inspire and support each. It is for that reason that Ms. Superpark® attendance is by invitation only.
SNOWBOARDER Magazine hand-picks the best-of-the-best in the sport to take part in this exclusive editorial park shoot. Similarly, the photographers and film crews on site also represent the most renowned in their field. Shooting the event this year will be Espen Lystad and Ashley Barker among others. “SNOWBOARDER is proud to facilitate collaboration among such an elite group of athletes and filmers,” says Chris Engelsman, Publisher, SNOWBOARDER Magazine. “Each year the girls push the envelope and we’re excited to see what they’re going to do tomorrow.”
